MAMA AFRICA :: A Mika Kaurismäki documentary

A documentary celebrating the life and music of South African singer Miriam Makeba, which combines archival material with interviews featuring Makeba's friends and colleagues.

Miriam Makeba was the first South African musician to become an international star but speaking out against apartheid forced her to leave South Africa and marrying Black Panther leader Stokely Carmichael forced her to leave New York.

Makeba and Carmichael moved to Guinea, where they were welcomed warmly, and when apartheid ended and Nelson Mandela became South Africa's president, Makeba returned home.
